When you see this, quote Leo McGarry.

There are a lot that came to mind--the funny ones, especially; John Spencer was so brilliantly funny--but this is the one I went with. It's one of my top favorites. The whole scene is wonderful, a classic Leo moment, in my opinion: a little humor, some humility, and a lot of humanity.

LEO: Karen, what you did caused a lot of problems, for me, for the President, and for a lot of people we don't even know. But I'm not sure it wasn't a little bit brave. Did you like working at the White House?

KAREN: Yes, sir.

LEO: Okay. Then why don't you go unpack your carton and you and I will give each other a second chance?

The Tonys included John Spencer in their memorial tribute. ::sniffle::

As a sidenote, I have never watched the Tonys before. I am finding them more entertaining than the Oscars.

Ode to Leo

Y'all have chosen many of the best, so I'll include a few random favorites that I thought of.

When you see this on your f-list, quote Leo McGarry.

"Karen, what you did caused a lot of problems. For me, for the President, for a lot of people we don't even know. But I'm not sure it wasn't a little bit brave."

"I am making a mental list of those who are snickering, and even as I speak I'm preparing appropriate retribution."

"17 across. Yes, 17 across is wrong. You're spelling his name wrong. What's my name? My name doesn't matter. I am just an ordinary citizen who relies on the Times crossword for stimulation. And I'm telling you that I met the man twice. And I recommended a pre-emptive missile strike against his air force, so I think I know how...They hang up on me every time."

Leo: You saw Sam's friend?
Sam: How did you know?
Leo: I had you tailed.
Josh: You had us tailed?
Leo: Yes.
Sam: Why?
Leo: On the off chance that you're as stupid as you look!

I know I'll think of a dozen more later, but for some reason it's mostly the funny ones that are coming to me. John Spencer had a really great comic delivery. Like in Celestial Navigation, when he tells a snarky, post-secret-plan-to-fight-inflation Josh, "I really think, Josh, out of all the people in this room, you wanna be the last one to speak." The way he angles his head and narrows his eyes, the delivery of the line through gritted teeth, just kills me every time I watch it.

Wow, do I miss John Spencer. I guess that's a little odd, since I hadn't watched the show in years, but now that I've been watching again...his absence is keenly felt. Election Day Part II was so hard to watch, and I kept thinking how hard it must've been to film. I was crying through practically the whole thing.

I know I didn't know John Spencer, but he was a wonderful, gifted actor, by all accounts a gentleman, and a fellow human being, and he made me love Leo McGarry, and so I am very sad right now.

ETA (from msnbc):

"“There are very few personal treasures that you put in your knapsack to carry with you for the rest of your life, and he’s one of those." -- Richard Schiff

"John was an uncommonly good man, an exceptional role model and a brilliant actor." -- Aaron Sorkin

“Everyone adored him." -- Allison Janney

“We have all lost a dear, dear brother.” -- Bradley Whitford
