janiejones: ([vicar] hilarious)
Eeee! I just downloaded "Late at Night" by Buffalo Tom, aka the song that Buffalo Tom was playing at Pike Street when Jordan Catalano was totally rude to Angela, and then again later when JORDAN CATALANO, LIKE, TOTALLY HELD ANGELA CHASE'S HAND IN THE HALLWAY AT SCHOOL, in SLOW-MOTION, and I rewound that scene a hundred times, and my little 14-year-old self cried at the romance and angst of it all.

Ah, memories...

Oh.

My God.

I was feeling bored tonight, so I decided (as you do) to Google friends and random people I went to school with (as you do). It's been 10 years since we all graduated, so I knew there would probably be sites up for reunions and such. And whoa my God, I found a picture of my very first boyfriend. We "went out" in 5th & 6th grades for a few months (equals 2 dog years) at a time, and then for like two weeks in junior high (we were the Liz & Dick of our set).

I cannot stress to you enough just how STARTLING it is to suddenly see a picture of someone at 28, when the last time you saw them they were 13.

Let's just say the years have not been gentle with the cute little blond boy I used to know.

I'm not trying to be mean. Odds are damn good he'd say the same about me were I to post a picture of myself somewhere for him to find. But still. Dude.

nostalgia

I forgot to say the other thing I loved in this week's GG was when we overheard Lorelai and the girls chanting, "Light as a feather, stiff as a board." Man, that takes me back. I can't even tell you the number of times my friends and I played that at slumber parties.

But you know, one of the things that was 'inauthentic' about that episode was that a fight didn't break out sometime during the night. I don't think that I ever experienced a slumber party without being involved in a fight, or taking sides during a fight, or mediating a fight. A fight always broke out. There's just something about getting a bunch of pre-teen girls together that brings out the petty bickering. Why is that?

Which reminds me...I have been DVR'ing My So-Called Life lately. That show holds up incredibly well; it really stands the test of time. And it makes me so nostalgic for the days of flannel shirts and overalls and boots and Toad the Wet Sprocket. ::loves::

I'm really showing my age, aren't I? Longing for the days of grunge! Like I could find a way to more clearly say, "I am a child of the 90s!" Hee.

Yeah, I clearly didn't know what I was going to post about today.

My best friend is the head librarian in my hometown library, and she's always reporting back to me on the funky kids names she hears from day to day. I think the latest takes the prize: A little girl named Synergy.

Is anyone else having flashbacks to Jem & the Holograms? "Showtime, Synergy!"

Why do people do this to their poor, defenseless kids?

Loving "I Love the 90s," especially Hal Sparks and Michael Ian Black and Mo Rocca. I sure do love me a sarcastic, witty man. And I definitely have a thing about dark-haired men, which does not at all explain why I ended up with a redhead. Also, I love Mo Rocca's lisp.

Watching reminded me that they have the first season of 'Quantum Leap' out on DVD, in case anyone other than me is now longing to buy it. I may splurge and get it when I get my first paycheck.

There is no end to the list of splurging I want to do when I get my first paycheck. If y'all love me, you will counsel me to be wise.

If y'all really love me, you will counsel me to buy not only the first season of QL but also of 'Northern Exposure.'

The pox!

My sister, M, has chicken pox. She's 16. She's miserable.

According to my mother, I never had the chicken pox. Which means I am extremely susceptible to it as an adult. Happy news! Luckily, I haven't been around my sister for the past few weeks so I probably missed the incubation phase, but this means that when my future children come down with it, so will Mommy!

In other news, I sent my dad the linkage to THHGTTG movie and the Marvin prototype and he was deeply disappointed. He ranted about the 'cuteness' of Marvin, same as pookha and I did. But he's holding out hope, God love 'im, as are we.

In other, other news, I am making a mix of all the music I listened to during my junior high and high school years in the 90s. I've made 3 CDs already, and I think at least 3 more are in the works. I have everything on here: Salt-n-Pepa "Let's Talk About Sex", Naughty By Nature "OPP", Mazzy Star, Boyz II Men, C+C Music Factory, Ace of Base, MILLI VANILLI.

Yes, Milli Vanilli. What? I loved them at the time; I was 11, I'm not ashamed. As I explained to Seth, the whole point of these CDs is not to portray my excellent taste in music, but to remind me of the good ol' days, back when I french-rolled my jeans ::gag:: and wore Hypercolor shirts, and those later days when an awesome weekend included pseudo-intellectualizing in coffee shops with a latte in front of me.

Of course, nostalgia and I can be a dangerous combination at times.
