Usually, I ignore the little sidebar of links Gmail always includes with incoming mail. It's the only thing I don't like about using their email. But today I saw this one: Why Mommy is a Democrat.

Hee! How awesome is that? Check out the sample pages. I am seriously getting this for Small Anne. It will piss off at least half my family, and all of S's, but I can live with that. It just plain looks cute and I want it. Plus, it will help Small Anne better understand why Mama is, in fact, a Democrat. ::g::

Tagged by [livejournal.com profile] dutch38. I am such a sucker for a meme.

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open it to page 161.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
5. Don't search around and look for the coolest book you can find. Do what's actually next to you.

"May I pour your bath?" the butler said. --Thank You For Smoking, Christopher Buckley

Has anyone else seen this movie yet, and if so did you love it like I did? And did you find that moment with Rob Lowe as freakin' hilarious as I did?

I haven't been tagged, but what the heck? It's about books!

1) Total number of books owned?

Our total book collection is 900+. Of those, at least half are mine.

2) The last book I bought?

I think it was Ya-Yas in Bloom, by Rebecca Wells.

3) The last book I read?

The Only Boy For Me by Gil McNeil. (Meh.)

4) 5 books that mean a lot to me?

East of Eden, by John Steinbeck
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams
Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott

5) 5 folks I'd like to see answer this meme (assuming they haven't already)? Um, I'm pretty sure y'all already have.

And now I disappear into the night once more... Muahahahaha.

So pretty.

[livejournal.com profile] dianora2 rocks. Y'all already knew that, but I'm still learning it. Hee.

I've badly needed a "squee" icon and a "bitch, please" icon, and I've been hoping to find some 'Project Runway' icons, and she totally delivered! I'm using Austin today; he's such a dainty little darling, isn't he?

Also--[livejournal.com profile] mcsister, keep meaning to tell you I finally got 'Homegrown Democrat' and am now admiring GK even more. What a fabulous, well-written book.

Happy Friday, everyone!

Bullet points!

  • Forgot to mention that I got to chat with [livejournal.com profile] austin360 during Alias the other night. We spoke a few times, giggling girlishly all the while, much to S's bemusement. Last night he said, "So are you going to do that every time we watch Alias?" I said (snippily), "Maybe." He said, "So long as it's just during commercials." Hee.

My friend J and I used to talk during West Wing episodes. While the show was on, we would just sit there with the phones, silently watching, occasionally making a quick comment. And that's one of the least dorky things we've ever done.

  • In the Shadow of Two Gunmen was on the WW marathon the other night. I still watch that every time I see it. It still gives me chills. Literally, chills. God, that was good stuff.

  • For my fellow Alan Rickmanistas: Have you seen yet that Alan will be doing the voice of Marvin the Paranoid Android in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? [livejournal.com profile] pookha and I have already spent a bit of time squeeeeeee-ing over that. So exciting!

  • My dad turns the big 5-0 on Sunday. We are taking my parents out for Japanese food, which should be fun. S and I are getting him a new pair of black Converse for one of his presents. Hee. I love having a dad who will love Converse as a present.

Hope everyone has a wunderbar weekend!

A year ago this weekend I was carousing in DC with two of my dearest friends. Sigh.

This is just my "Happy 4th, everyone, and have a great weekend!" post. The Snippet and I are going to my parents' tomorrow for grilled burgers and lashings of potato salad, but the rest of the weekend we are spending in the Great Library Organization of 2004. We are cataloging all our books on a spreadsheet, and then we are going to reorganize them, possibly into fiction and nonfiction, but definitely into alphabetical order.

So far we are up to book #210 on the spreadsheet, with four entire bookshelves to go, and I must say we are having entirely too much fun with this. Because we are nerds.

Which leads me to the book meme what I stole from Macha. )

I can't wean myself from the bullet points.

  • First things first: Tomorrow is Towel Day. At least carry a mental towel around with you, and remember fondly that hoopiest frood of them all, Douglas Adams.

  • The weekend was good. S's grandparents flew into town for his youngest brother's graduation, and they (gparents) spent the weekend spoiling us at our favorite restaurants, and generally kissing us to pieces and praising us to the skies. I really love his grandparents, almost as much as I love my own. I have wonderful grandparents, but the Snippet's grandparents are, like, the most grandparent-y grandparents I've ever been around. They think I am the greatest thing ever to happen to the Snippet.

His grandpa is the cutest thing ever; he actually has a twinkle in his eye, and he is always teasing S's grandma: "Hey there, pretty little thing. Do I know you? I'd sure like to." It is totally adorable. They've been married 50 years next month.

  • The Snippet was sunburned so badly on his shoulders that it's turned into blisters. It is, quite frankly, really gross to look at. Ask me why I felt the need to share that.

  • I read George Burns's biography about his wife, Gracie Allen. It is a very sweet book; I read it ages ago, when I was a teenager, and I loved it. It's even better now for some reason. I also finally--FINALLY--found a copy of Paul Wellstone's 'The Conscience of a Liberal.' Huzzah! I can't wait to start it.

  • I found old copies of 'Bridge to Terabithia,' 'Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh,' 'Jacob Have I Loved,' 'The Egypt Game,' and 'Five Little Peppers Midway.' Motherlode!

  • I have decided that Heaven is filled with books and comfy chairs to read in.

  • Nothing on the job front. Won't someone pay me to stay at home? I love it, and I'm really, really good at it. Supervisor material, even.

I just finished "The President's Daughter", and I loved it. I'm going to order "Long Live the Queen" off Amazon, but does someone want to tell me why "White House Autumn" starts out at $24 USED?

[livejournal.com profile] christinekh's response to my last post gave me an idea. If anyone is bored enough and/or just likes pushing their favorite books, would you be so kind as to recommend to me the three books you think everyone should read?

I've been so starved for new books lately, and every time I go to the bookstore, I draw a complete blank. And I'm not a huge advocate of "ooh, that looks interesting; think I'll get it!" I mean, I do it sometimes, but I prefer not to play it like a crap shoot. I like to have an idea of the book and its merits.

So. Anyone who's interested--whether you're friended, or have just surfed on in here--if you take the time to offer up your three selections for "Must-Reads", I'll be so grateful. I kind of like the idea of getting random opinions, because I know people like things I never think of. It's good to try new things.

And by God, this time around, I'll make a list and I'll follow it. We're up for our monthly trip to The Most Kick-Ass Used Bookstore Ever, and I'll be all set!
    janiejones: (Default)
I think I've done this right...bolded the titles I've read. Some of them *cough*Clan of the Cave Bear*hack*, I'm not proud to list amongst the titles I've read. Some of them (Wuthering Heights; The Old Man and the Sea) I hated. Others (Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, Hitchhiker's, Thornbirds) I've read and re-read over and over again.

I love books. The 200 Book Meme )

I didn't rate an opinion on each book, otherwise we'd be here forever.
