Back to school

My dad is going back to school. He's in the midst of a comp class at the moment, and has enlisted me for help with grammar, punctuation, etc. That seems to be one of my true talents in life. I wouldn't say I remember every rule, or even most of them, but I seem to have a good feel for what belongs where, and when.
Anyway, helping him has taught me two things (and I don't mean that in some twee, condescending kind of way): 1) I've never really known him to write much of anything, but from what I've seen so far, he really has a feel for words and descriptions and tone and pacing. It's cool, yet disconcerting after all these years, to realize that's probably where I get whatever writing talent I possess. No one in my family writes, or wants to write, and so I sort of have always had this idea that my love of writing, and relative talent for it, came from out of nowhere. Now I know that it didn't.
The second thing is more of a reminder, I guess. My dad is smart, people. He is so smart. He really, really is. And I am so proud of him, and I mean that in the least patronizing way possible. I've always known he was smart; both my parents are phenomenally smart and well-read. But you know, it's sort of humbling to be helping your dad with his homework. Also? It feels really, really good. I can finally pay him back for all those hours he drilled algebra and Hemingway into my head with infinite patience (though neither of them took, ha ha).
By the way, I totally did not mean to sound like some weepy, Hallmark movie there. This is not a movie-of-the-week. My dad is not overcoming any obstacles except time (which is a hell of an obstacle, really). Violins don't play while we bond over his comp homework. I don't gaze at him with tear-filled eyes. The music will not swell when the credits roll. I just think he is awesome and I felt like writing about it.

Scan my interest list and pick out the one that seems the most odd to you.
I'll explain it.
Then you post this in your journal so other people can ask you about your interests.
If you're bored, drop me a response! Hee.

Date: 2005-01-21 05:41 pm (UTC)Well now I'm picturing Janie and Her Dad a two part series about a woman and her father who begin to see eye to eye as they work together to rid the world of improper grammar. It's a touching tale of a love of not only a father and daughter, but of the English language.
